Address: No11 Coronation Street with Eileen Grimshaw
Occupation: Barmaid at Rovers Return
First arrived
8th October, 2004, when she was taken on by Fred Elliott as a barmaid at the Rovers Return after being highly recommended by the Landlord of The Flying Horse.
Character reference
Just like the flower she’s named after, Violet is a pleasing and sweet girl but not very robust and rather inclined to wilt. She used to go to Weatherfield High where Ken Barlow was one of her teachers. She never fulfilled her potential at school so it’s not too surprising that Ken used to call her Violet "Haze". Violet has spent time travelling abroad and worked with Sean Tully at Handbags bar.
Love life
Violet arrived on the Street with secrets from her past. She left her job at The Flying Horse after a relationship went sour and her past harbours an affair with a married man, who was also a family friend. She ended up getting badly hurt and hasn’t spoken to her family for years.
When she started work in the Rovers, it was love at first sight when she met Jason Grimshaw and she moved into No11 to live with him and his mum.
All went well for Violet and Jason until Jason’s boss Charlie Stubbs started flirting with her after hours at work. Violet fell for his charms and ended up snogging Charlie. She felt so guilty that she confessed all to Jason, who decided to forgive her.
However, when Violet found out that Jason had started seeing Sarah Platt, she dumped him and moved into the Rovers. Jason begged Violet to take him back but she was already plotting her revenge… and put a poster of Jason in a phonebox advertising him as a gay masseuse! This didn’t deter Jason and he proposed to Violet even though he was still seeing Sarah. Violet turned him down flat.
Violet then started dating Jamie Baldwin and moved in to live with him and stepmum Frankie at No7. She couldn’t understand why Jamie was so distant towards her but then discovered that Jamie and Frankie were lovers. Violet then found out she was pregnant with Jamie’s baby but in a tragic scene, she was rushed to hospital where she lost the baby. The consultant explained that she had an ectopic pregnancy which could leave her unable to have any more children.
This news weighed heavily on Violet’s mind but she still wanted to get pregnant and went on dates just so she could have a child. When Sean found out what she was up to, he reminded her that they’d talked in the past about having a baby together and offered to be the father of her child.
What next for Violet?
Actress Jenny Platt has already announced she will be leaving the show when her contract comes to an end next year. But how will Violet leave? And what will Sean say if she takes the baby with her?
Memorable scene
When she dressed up as Marilyn Monroe for the Rovers fancy dress party, and also when she had to tempt Sean into bed so that they could get down to baby-making business.
